Although Marco Rubio's speech at the 2026 Munich Security Conference was undoubtedly a brilliant piece of rhetoric, at its core it was an alt-right manifesto. It was shocking in its view of the world, its vision of the future and shocking in its claim to US supremacy.

As a listener, I was initially calmed by Rubio's speech,1 which was so different in tone to J.D. Vance's a year before. It was a relief not to have to face another EU-bashing speech. But at its core, it was the same message: a radical manifesto of alt-right ideology. Therefore, it is labelled a 'poisoned statement of love'.2
